SOCIETY, POLITICS, AND CULTURE

LIZZO

RESEARCH

I already knew some of Lizzo's songs, but chose to look further into her history and how she broke into the music industry, as well as watching some of her career defining performances.

IDEA GENERATION

Pinterest
- 3d model of celebritys heads ?
- reference to Robert Grossman caricature style
- vibrant colours, plain block colour backgrounds
- if possible, include hands ? i.e, Lizzo playing flute ?
- when photographed, I could possibly make elements move, i.e Lizzos fingers moving on flute
- this could be turned into GIFs to include in digital versions of the articles

- not enough time to complete models at this scale
- decrease size of models for Dolly and Churchill ?
- create digital portraits of all 3 celebrities instead of 3d models
- try to include something significant to each one, i.e, Churchill cigarettes ? Dolly large earrings ? Lizzo sparkly bodysuit ?

ROBERT GROSSMAN - ROLLING STONES COVER

DEVELOPMENT

I initially decided I wanted to experiment using 3d model making for my portraits. I found that I really enjoyed the process, however, the sculpture ended up being about 22cm in height, which ended up being too large to complete in one week, to keep up with the upcoming portraits I would receive over the next 2 weeks.

I created a bust of Lizzo's head, using air dry clay and lots of recyclable materials. I left the final piece incomplete after realising I would not be continuing down this 3d model route, but would like to revist and complete it in the future.
Pose References:
I tried to keep my sketches loose while developing a style to include in my final piece, experimenting with quick sketches of dynamic poses.

FINAL OUTCOME

DOLLY PARTON

RESEARCH

I knew a lot of Dolly Parton's songs when beginning this project, but did not know her full backstory and career. I watched lots of videos debriefing her early life and breakout into the country music scene.

DEVELOPMENT

I tried to keep my sketches loose while developing a style to include in my final piece, experimenting with ways to keep the facial features relatively simple, while still looking like Dolly.

FINAL OUTCOME

I wanted to incorporate plaid into the final piece as a nod to Dollys country roots when she would perform in more casual flannel outfits, while including her famously large hair, and giant earrings. If I had more time, I would like to make a GIF version of the portrait, possibly including Dolly winking at the camera, or a blinding sparkle on her teeth.

WINSTON CHURCHILL

RESEARCH

I only had a very basic knowledge of Winston Churchill at the start of this project, so I spent a lot of time researching his work as Prime Minister and how he achieved a reputation as one of Britains most known leaders, due to his leadership efforts during the wartime.

DEVELOPMENT

I tried to keep my sketches loose while developing a style to include in my final piece, experimenting with different shapes and seeing how simple I could leave the facial features while still resembling Churchill.

FINAL OUTCOMES

I wanted to incorporate key recognisable elements to Churchill's appearance, such as his bowler hat, bow tie, peace sign, and cigar. If I had more time, I would like to make a GIF version of the portrait, possibly including smoke leading from Churchill's cigar, or a slight movement to his hands or bow tie.
